PASTOR - Hilltop Baptist Church (ERICKSON, MB)

Profile of Church and Community

Hilltop Baptist Church is a small rural church, averaging an attendance of 40 -50 per Sunday, drawing its congregation from a 40 km. radius. It is 7 km. from Erickson, a town of 500, and near a First Nations Reserve. There are K-12 schools in town.
There is a three-bedroom parsonage located just behind the church, with a small barn, space for a large garden, and 40 acres of fenced bush/pasture land.
The congregation has been described as “close”. “intimate”. And “like a family”. A small number are farmers, a number are retired, a number commute to various jobs from rural homes, and a few are from the reserve. Since we are on the edge of a cottage/lake area just south of Riding Mountain National Park, we have a much increased attendance during the summers, and conversely, during the winter, miss a number of summer residents who attend regularly during that season.
Our worship has been in a fairly traditional format, using a mixture of old hymns, choruses, and contemporary songs. We have a piano and an organ, and a pianist and a song leader. At present, we have no organist or anyone with other instrumental skills.
Children’s ministries have been the sparkplug of this church’s growth during the past ten years. At present, we have about 12 in Sunday School, 16 in mid-week clubs, and an annual VBS of 70-80.

Description of Position of Pastor

We are looking for the type of pastor:
-who has a deep commitment to Christ, and is passionate about the Word of God. He maintains a disciplined life of prayer and personal devotion, as well as serving as an example of high moral and ethical character.
-who is willing to live, serve, and work together with the people of this congregation to promote the gospel in this community.
-who is a preacher and a teacher of the Word who preaches sermons and conducts studies which challenge us to think through our faith and which give us strength and encouragement for our daily lives.
-who has Bible School or Seminary training (not necessarily a degree) and accepts the Baptist General Conference statement of faith.
-who fufills the normal duties of a pastor, including ministering to the sick, dying, and bereaved; administering baptism and communion; conducting weddings and funerals; talking with individuals about their relationship to Christ; and counseling those facing major decisions or problems.
-who promotes and oversees the development of lay leadership by drawing on the strengths of the congregation, and encouraging the development of gifts.
-who is a “people person” who enjoys rural life and becomes involved with community activities to some extent.
-who takes a personal interest in individuals and gets to know their situations and needs.
-who enjoys working with children and youth, and will provide leadership in our children’s programming
-who demonstrates humility by being able to give and receive criticism.

The church realizes that a pastor has unique, individual strengths and gifts, and does not expect him to be perfect, any more than we can claim to be a perfect church.

FULL-TIME CHRISTIAN WORKER - Thorhild Living Gospel Fellowship (THORHILD, AB)

Dear Brothers in Christ,
We want to outline our desire and need to find a suitable candidate that would fill a unique ministry need in our church.
To us the most obvious candidate that can be envisioned would be a spiritually and emotionally mature man, not necessarily the most eloquent amongst his peers, but outstanding in his passion for the lost, noted for his gentle spirit, the one that other frequently come to for encouragement and counsel. He needs to be happily and healthily married to provide good emotional stability and reduce vulnerability in the constant new contacts (many of whom will be the opposite gender.) This candidate needs to be one who has a strong sense of calling into ministry, and who is willing to work with a mature and active local church board. The goal is to provide a challenging and promising ministry opportunity that will shape and foster a long term definition of effective ministry. Though the Thorhild Living Gospel Fellowship has a 50yr history -this is basically a new Church Plant – where the candidate will be working with a solid team of Christian workers.

This full time commitment is designed to increase the effectiveness of the present ministry team, a group comprised of missionary, pastoral and experienced church leadership called together to form a board that would rebuild what was devastated by a nasty church split. After two years now, this same board has arrived at the conclusion that it is time to engage a full time Christian worker. The role is not to be the traditional “Pastoral Role” on which the load of the ministry is “dumped” while the leadership takes only an administrative perspective. The structure and function of the Church is geared to actively involve the membership in discussion Bible Study, outreach and mentoring.

The format of the services reflect this engaging approach by placing the chairs in a circle, rather than in rows. Every Sunday one of the elders (or leader in training) facilitates the Bible Study after a period of sharing and singing. The study is on a pre-announced text or Scripture passage, to which the congregation is expected to have read and attempted some reflection or study. This approach was adopted in an effort to evade the traditional expectation of so many to simply come and be “spoon fed.”

The result has been an expectancy and interest in collectively studying the Scriptures for the information, the encouragement and teaching needed for daily successful Christian Living. At present no one wants to return to the former style and format of a “one-man-lead” service. The “priesthood of the believers” is becoming a reality. We are painfully conscious that the only way that we can grow our numbers is by a concerted effort at outreach. A certain preparedness for God’s provision of the “new babes in Christ” to arrive is being anticipated. We need help to find these “unborn babes” as our present staff is faced with the limitations of travel distances and the average overall age of the church membership is well over 50.

This is literally a missions opportunity right here at home. The core of the task is grass roots evangelism and discipleship, which we believe would provide an excellent starting point and ministry definition for a couple looking at full time ministry. We are quite able to supply for the financial needs of their ministry.

Sincerely,
Steve Dennis (Church secretary)

Christian Worker Duties:
Sharing in the teaching duties of the leadership and conducting of public prayer times.
Evangelism – to be an active agent in outreach and winning of new converts.
Regular mentorship of new converts (with the goal of involving these in other new contacts).

Qualities and Personal Traits:
Self starter – able to see what is and how to proceed to the next task.
Accountability - expects and processes the mentoring of the local Church leadership.
Keeps records of time usage, tasks, contacts, conversation summaries.
People driven personality – but not a people pleaser , not allowing compromise & discrepancies Tendency towards being disciplined and routine.
Good grasp of Biblical concepts and clarity in those explanations.
Consistency in personal life and conduct.
Not easily discouraged by a lack of obvious progress.
Gentle spirited –but not dissuaded by public opinion.
Humble on the path of success and progress.
Not needing frequent affirmations to be able to continue – sees the rewards of servant hood. Someone who has left something to follow God.

Spiritual Standard:
Absolutely overwhelmed by the love of Christ
Conscious of personal failure – but not overwhelmed or frequently overcome by it.
Careful to keep short accounts with God and man – “leaves no sin at his door”.
Confident in the sustaining ability of the inner work of Christ.
Growing in obedience to the Scriptures under the teaching of the Holy Spirit.
Walks under the control of and submissive to the direction of the Spirit of God. An obvious “Gift of Evangelism” - has a passionate desire to reach people for Christ.

The Ministry projection – finding a full time Christian Worker
The idea of a full time worker for Thorhild Living Gospel Fellowship is to provide enough man hours to “boost start” the overall impact on the community. The long range goal is to produce a solid core of individuals who are growing in their understanding and proficiency at Christian living, sharing the Gospel, and then mentoring those they have reached (while continuing to grow themselves.)
The uniqueness of the Thorhild area is in that many of those who are not “gainfully employed” are actually available at a variety of hours, opening a much larger spectrum of time open to minister to them. However, that being said, this is not a 9-5 job. Unlike most Pastoral assignments, where the majority of the week is absorbed in sermon preparation, this is an outreach, a true missionary task. The Elders will continue to share the load of Sunday lesson preparations, along with some participation in the mentoring and outreach. The specific task assigned here is to compliment the efforts of the elders by multiplying the hours made available to perform these duties. This assignment will be subsidized by the Church funds. The rate will be determined in light of the individual situation. However, housing and travel allowance will be provided.

?

The growth of the TLGF will be directly proportionate to the amount of new conversions. The true success of that growth will be dependent on the nurturing of these to a proper level of maturity and stability in faith and practice. Simply growing the Church in numbers is not our focus. Thorhild town by nature of it’s social and economic dynamics, has a somewhat larger proportion of dysfunctional individuals. The healing process of entering into a right relationship with God, will enable and encourage a good percentage of those won to Christ to go where they can be gainfully employed and more productive. Even though this does not serve the purpose of increasing the long term number in church attendance, it is very productive in the overall picture. This inevitable population shift serves as good personal training opportunity, especially in the general growth process of one’s individual effectiveness in personal evangelism and spiritual growth.

To accomplish this type of progress involves the early engagement of new believers in the cycle of outreach. The “grow as you go” –hands on teaching, will shape their instinctive spiritual expectations. The resultant concept that one should be involved in evangelism will be normal and natural - as it should be. God designed that this must carry forward into the perspective of the new converts. Inclusion in of new believers in outreach does not assume a perfect accomplishment in either life or presentation, but it puts to the forefront the obvious need for one’s life and words to be consistent. My father was an effective personal evangelist; so much so that I thought everyone knew how to evangelize.

The personal and practical emphasis on steady Christian Living it is the practical out working of the effort to keep word and life consistent. If our faith is not practical and working, it will not be contagious or attractive to those we seek to reach for Him. We believe it is important to remind ourselves from time to time that the work of salvation is solely the work of God. However, the spread of the message is within our scope of ability to communicate once filled and directed by the Spirit of the Living God. We are instructed by Jesus’ last words go and to tell – even though everyone will not listen or receive it well.

The Thorhild leadership team is unique in that is presently comprised of mostly of those living outside of the local community. This team was pulled together from a variety of sources and ministry backgrounds which provided a wealth of experience and commitment. However, having only week-ends to dedicate to the ministry combined with lengthy travelling times has significantly thwarted the local growth progress. After considerable prayer and discussion our conclusion was to seek out a full time Christian Worker to help make a better local presentation.

We have spent two years building a model of Church involvement that was aimed at correcting any passivity or wanting merely to be spiritually “spoon-fed”. The active role of collective Bible discussion has produced a personalized hunger and interest in the Word of God. We are not willing to abandon this development for the traditional pastoral role. Our hope is to find someone who will help maintain this mindset and now help the Church body move forward in the task of reaching the lost. The town and surrounding farming area boasts about 5000 souls –most of whom do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

...Who will come over and help us?
