General Church and Community Description

The First Baptist Church of Portage la Prairie is located directly in Portage la Prairie, MB. We are located 75 km west of Winnipeg. Portage is very diverse culturally, with a population of approximately 13 000. We have 40 active members, with about 20 “inactive” members. We truly have a church family relationship amongst one another.

Currently, the following ministries/groups are being offered: (what others do we do)

  • Willing Hands (women’s ministry)
  • Sunday School (during the worship service for children birth to 12 years old)
  • Various house groups (offered during the day and evening)
  • Personal Care home ministry through music
  • Partner with other community churches to provide Vacation Bible School (summer)
  • Support inner-city churches through monetary and material gifts
  • Send church and other local youth to summer camps
  • Operation Christmas Child (Christmas shoeboxes)
  • Support Baptist missionaries world-wide through prayer and monetary gifts

Position Description
Together, as a congregation, we serve the one true God, and believe in the Holy Trinity and use the Holy Bible as the basis of all we do as a church community. Our congregation is comprised of mostly person 65+ years, with a small number of children and youth. As a church, we would like to grow the church in order to maintain the church’s existence.

Primary Responsibilities

  • is an effective communicator with members/adherents of all ages (children, youth, adults, seniors)
  • has the gift of shepherding and pastoral care, especially with senior members/adherents and who is patient, kind, approachable
  • demonstrates the fruits of the spirit; adheres to the Word of God
  • be spiritually passionate about their relationship with God and reflects that outwardly
  • is a visionary in their leadership as a means to grow the church in membership
  • focuses on Bible-centered preaching from the pulpit, and as needed, in a small house group setting
  • recognizes prayer is important; participates in prayer meetings, prayer time an outside of Sunday worship with members/adherents, as needed/requested
  • recognizes and supports that praise and worship is important, but does not necessarily need to lead it
  • participates in and works with the Board and deacons to effectively continue the day-to-day running of church affairs, events and matters
  • visits those who are in hospital/unwell/unable to attend church on a regular basis
  • able to effectively lead/perform funerals, marriages, baby dedications, as needed
  • possesses counseling skills (i.e. addiction, marriage, etc.)
  • minister to people of various walks of life (multi-generations, and nationalities)
  • be evangelistic and outreaching to those in need within the church and larger community
  • aid those in the church to see their gifts and develop and train leaders


  • be accountable first and foremost to God, to the Deacon’s Board and Council, and ultimately to the membership
  • follow the CBWC’s statement of faith
  • follow the CBWC’s code of conduct, and other policies, procedures and protocol


  • some experience and education preferred, but not absolutely necessary, depending on the applicant’s background
  • ordination (or eligibility) for ministry with the CBWC

Employment Details

  • is a part-time position with salary based on the CBWC scale, depending on education and experience
  • help with be given to the successful applicant in terms of locating housing
  • start date is January 1, 2018
